Fashion says a lot about who you are, where you’re from and where you might be going. That’s why I decided to speak to Alex Dask of Australia’s Wanderlust Watches about his thoughts on fashion and traveling around the globe.

* * *

Take Off, Set Sail: Wanderlust Watches states that they believe in taking the time to explore. Can you explain how much this means to you and how it relates to your watches?

Alex Dask: As you mention, our mission is to encourage people to take the time to explore. We believe traveling is important as it is the only thing you can buy that makes you richer. People who have travelled have a broader view of the world and as a result are typically more empathetic and compassionate.

TOSS: Was there ever a time in your life where you maybe weren’t as passionate about traveling? And if so, what flipped the switch? How did you become so fascinated by the wonderful world of wandering?

AD: I have done a lot of traveling from a young age with my family. My sister was actually born in Los Angeles and my father was born in Greece, so I have spent a lot of time in Europe and the United States. However, I would say my real love for travel really started when I was a bit older and could start exploring places for myself. It was this sense of adventure and discovering the unknown that I immediately fell in love with.

TOSS: Typically, people who think of fashion-forward travel destinations think of Paris, Milan, Barcelona, etc. Being an up-and-coming watch brand from Australia, can you describe the fashion scene on the island and how it may have inspired the creation of Wanderlust Watches?

AD: I know I am somewhat biased, but I think Australia is a bit underrated when it comes to our fashion, music — and arts scene, more broadly. Sydney and Melbourne are very cosmopolitan cities with their own unique styles, on par with most international cities. In saying that, we do have a somewhat laid-back, simple vibe that definitely translates into our fashion sense. I would say this has influenced the Wanderlust Watches brand with our simple, minimalistic designs.

Aside from fashion, Australians — more broadly — are frequent travelers, and this outlook has definitely influenced the Wanderlust Watches brand and our mission to encourage people to take the time to explore.

TOSS: Your site claims that you boast a travel-heavy modeling resume, Alex. Where has your modeling career taken you? Likewise, where was the best place you’ve ever shot?

AD: Firstly, let me clarify that I was by no means David Gandy. Although, during my time modeling I did get to do a fair amount of traveling. Most of the time was spent in New York, London, Italy, Spain and other parts of Europe. It’s hard to pick the best place, but if I had to choose I would say it was shooting in this beautiful remote coastal town a few hours outside of Athens. However, again I am biased as my father was born in a small town called Kiato — also just a few hours from Athens — so I have a strong connection to Greece.

TOSS: Okay. Last question. And watch out because it’s a doozy. If you could visit anywhere in the world you haven’t already been to, where would it be and why?

AD: Iceland has been on the bucket list for a while now, but I still haven’t managed to get there. I am really into photography and Iceland is amazingly picturesque, so that would be the main reason for the trip. The dream would be to photograph the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Iceland seems to be on the bucket lists of many, these days. And who could blame them? I know that it’s definitely near the top of mine at the moment. One thing is for sure, should I ever make it out there to see the Northern Lights for myself, I’ll do my best to be a bit more mindful of my appearance.
